Drywall calculator for sheet counts & layout

HammerCalc’s drywall calculator helps you turn wall length and height into sheet counts — a practical sheetrock calculator for hangers, remodelers, and estimators who already live in feet-and-inches math.

What this drywall calculator does

Enter wall dimensions and get a clear sheet count for common 4×8, 4×10, or 4×12 boards. Keep takeoffs next to square footage and mixed-unit math instead of bouncing between apps.

  • Sheet counts from wall length and height
  • Built for drywall and sheetrock takeoffs on site
  • Works with feet, inches and fractions
  • Save results into notes with calculation history

More than a one-purpose sheetrock calculator

A single-purpose drywall widget can’t finish the rest of the estimate. HammerCalc pairs sheet counts with area tools and a full construction keypad for contractors.

How to calculate drywall sheets (formula)

Wall area ≈ length × height (minus large openings if you deduct them). Sheets ≈ ceil(wall_area ÷ sheet_area). A 4×8 sheet is 32 sq ft; 4×12 is 48 sq ft. Add waste (often 10–15%) for cuts and breakage.

12 ft × 8 ft wall = 96 sq ft ÷ 32 ≈ 3 sheets → order 4 sheets with waste

Worked example: how many drywall sheets

A single 12 ft wall, 8 ft plates, using 4×8 sheets:

  • Given: Wall 12 ft long × 8 ft high; 4×8 sheets (32 sq ft)
  • Area: 12 × 8 = 96 sq ft
  • Sheets: 96 ÷ 32 = 3 exact; with ~10% waste order 4 sheets

FAQ

How do I calculate how many drywall sheets I need?

Multiply wall length × height for area, divide by sheet area (32 sq ft for 4×8), round up, then add waste for cuts.

Is a sheetrock calculator the same as a drywall calculator?

Yes in practice — both estimate gypsum board counts from wall dimensions. HammerCalc uses the drywall tool name in-app.

Should I subtract doors and windows?

For tighter takeoffs, yes. Deduct large opening areas before dividing by sheet size, then still add waste.

Does HammerCalc include a drywall calculator on iPhone?

Yes. Drywall tools are part of the pro tool set on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
